Gum disease is inflammation of the structures around the teeth due to bacteria in the dental plaque. The three stages of gum disease from least severe to most severe are gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Gum disease can be painless, so you and your dentist should be on the lookout for the worsening of these symptoms:
- Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums
- Painful chewing
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Gums that recede from the tooth
- Pus around the teeth and gums
