Everyone wants a sparkling, white smile. In fact, when the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry asked people what they’d most like to improve about their smile, the most common response was whiter teeth. But, unfortunately, diet, aging, and oral hygiene can lead to teeth yellowing, making it difficult to keep (or get) those pearly whites like you want.

Right now, states are required to provide dental benefits to children covered by Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), but states choose whether to provide dental benefits for adults covered by Medicaid. In Colorado, the dental benefit for adults provides eligible Medicaid members up to $1,000 in dental services per fiscal year. According to the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing, the adult benefit covers:
- Basic preventive dental exams
- Diagnostic and restorative dental services (such as x-rays and fillings)
- Extractions (tooth pulling)
- Root canals
- Crowns
- Partial dentures*
- Complete dentures*
- Periodontal scaling
- Root planing
- Other procedures requiring prior authorization will also be available.
* Partial and complete dentures are not subject to the $1,000 cap per state fiscal year.

Brush longer and more frequently. To remove all of the plaque and bacteria, you should brush your teeth three times a day. Because there are more places for the plaque and bacteria to hide, you should also brush for two to four minutes each time. The quality of your brushing is most important: be sure to brush all around the brackets, between teeth, and along the gum line.
Choose teeth-healthy foods. Avoid sugary foods and beverages like soda, sweets, and other desserts.
Avoid foods that can damage your braces. Foods that are hard or sticky can cause damage. Avoid foods that can get stuck in your braces like hard candies, gum, ice, licorice, nuts, beef jerky, and hard, crusty bread.

Young children with braces shouldn’t be expected to floss on their own. They need help from a parent or guardian. Sit them down in a well-lit room with some music or a TV show and floss teeth as instructed above.

What you need:
- Waxed floss – Unwaxed floss tends to get caught and shred in braces.
- Floss threader – Helps floss slip between each tooth without catching.
- Time – About three times more than you’d spend on your teeth without braces.
Carefully loop a piece of 18-inch floss through the threader. Use the stiff end of the threader to direct the floss under the wire. Once the floss is under the wire, gently slide the floss along the side and up into the gum line of each tooth. Remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth.

Bacteria love all of the dark nooks and crannies in your mouth. It settles in, hides out, and if left long enough, it creates plaque in those areas. If plaque isn’t cleaned away, tooth decay and gum disease develop.
When you have braces, the brackets on your teeth trap food particles, and the wires get in the way of brushing and flossing. It’s more difficult to clean the hard to reach places, so people with braces are more likely to get cavities and gingivitis.
Here’s why you should take extra care to floss daily with braces:
- Prevents swollen and bleeding gums.
- Decreases chances of tooth decay, gum disease, and white spots forming around the brackets.
- Makes your teeth and gums healthy and ready for the world when your braces are removed.

Braces are an amazing way to create healthy, beautiful smiles. They correct overbites, under bites, crooked or crowded teeth, jaw position, and disorders of the jaw. Unfortunately, braces also make it harder to floss and care for your teeth.
It takes extra time and effort, but it is possible to keep your mouth looking and feeling healthy and clean when you have braces.

Regular dental visits and x-rays are the best way to know if it’s time to get your wisdom teeth out. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s possible that your wisdom teeth aren’t growing in properly. Contact your dentist if you experience:
● Pain at the tooth site
● Prolonged jaw ache or headache
● Unpleasant taste in the area
Your dentist will likely recommend consulting with an oral surgeon to determine the need to have your wisdom teeth removed.

Because human jaws are smaller, wisdom teeth can become blocked by the teeth that are already there. They can grow horizontally, at an angle, or outward. Wisdom teeth can damage surrounding teeth, the jawbone, or nerves. If the wisdom tooth partially erupts, it can be difficult to brush and floss the area. Food can get trapped in the gum tissue surrounding it, making it vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.
Impacted or infected wisdom teeth can cause pain, difficulty eating, and problems with the surrounding teeth and gums.

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars to erupt. They begin forming around the age of 10 and typically show up in the back of the mouth in the late teens or early twenties; thus the name “wisdom teeth,” as people of this age are thought to be wiser. (Though some might argue that point.)
Wisdom teeth were a necessity for our ancestors. Our ancestors needed a big jaw and a lot of teeth to chew leaves, roots, raw meat, and other tough foods. Our diets are different now; we no longer need all of those teeth which is good since our jaw is smaller, and now we don’t have room for an extra set.
The number of wisdom teeth a person has can vary. Some people never get wisdom teeth. Some people can have them their whole lives with no problem. But many people do have a problem, and approximately 85% of wisdom teeth will need to be removed.
