If you don’t have enough saliva production, it can result in bad breath and/or a dry mouth. Dry mouth is usually temporary; however those who suffer from a persistent condition of dry mouth are referred to as having xerostomia.
Xerostomia causes your mouth tissue, tongue, and gums to be swollen and painful. Without enough saliva to rinse the mouth, bacteria forms and it’s this that causes bad breath. Additionally, those who suffer from dry mouth are more likely to develop periodontal disease. Because periodontal disease is so prevalent in American culture, the American Academy of Periodontology suggests nearly 50% of of all adults have had some stage of it, it is no wonder why dental professionals are urging you to chew gum as part of a good oral care routine.
What can you do today to support healthier teeth, gums, and fresh breath? While no replacement for brushing, flossing, or using mouthwash, sugarless chewing gum after meals is a quick, easy, proactive choice!

Saliva washes out your mouth several times during the day. Saliva is predominately water, but it also contains proteins and minerals needed to keep your teeth healthy and to digest your food.
Chewing sugar-free gum after meals stimulates saliva production which:
- Helps you swallow easier
- Helps you taste and chew better
- Supports enamel
- Offers protection against tooth decay
- Prevents bad breath
- Fights germs

What is meant by chew in the daily four? Chew, in this instance, is encouraging you to chew sugarless gum after eating. Why? Because when you chew gum; it stimulates saliva production, which in turn reduces plaque, cleans food particles out of your mouth, and neutralizes acids that can break down tooth enamel.
In fact, clinical studies show that people who chew gum that’s sugar-free for 20 minutes after meals can help prevent tooth decay and can even strengthen the enamel on their teeth!

There are plenty of diets you can choose right now, but those take a lot of work and commitment. Instead, move troublesome snacks from high visibility, easy eat-ability to a little more difficult place. Whatever your “problem food” may be, move it into the pantry, or on a taller shelf- just somewhere a little less easy to access. When you are in a pinch, you will know where to find it, but it won’t be looking you in the eye, tempting you. That’s an easy start as a part of good habits to adopt, yes?
While visiting the dentist didn’t make this top five list, it should be a consideration and always makes any list of good habits to adopt. At PERFECT TEETH, we make it easy to get back or stay on track of your dental health.

While dentists can’t seem to agree on the benefits of drinking through a straw to prevent cavities (they just want you to stay away from the sugary drinks altogether), there does seem to be a consensus on giving them up for other reasons. Most recently in news, a famous actor declined a straw because it wasn’t recyclable and therefore an ocean pollutant. Less recently, but more widely reported, is getting “smoker’s lips” from drinking from a straw. This “condition” refers to wrinkles around the lips due to excessive use of a straw, or straw-like things such as cigarettes. And, the final reason to give up straws are the connection they have to creating excess air in your digestive track… which has to find its way out somewhere.

While a silk pillow case is no replacement for a healthy skin care routine, it can be beneficial for those in dry climates. Pillowcases made of cotton pull moisture, allergens, and bacteria towards itself. If you apply moisturizing products before bed and then sleep on cotton, you are giving it even more to absorb. Losing moisture from your hair and face is just irritating both for you and your skin. Choosing silk over cotton reduces friction, resulting in less skin irritation and less hair breakage.

You’ve probably heard time and again that carrying a large, heavy purse is killing your back and shoulder. Organizational systems allow you to hold more in the same space, but that’s not quite the point. Do you need to carry everything with you? Women have begun to use a multi-bag solution to keep what they “need” close, but limit what they carry, and it’s a huge weight off their shoulders… literally. Consider these purse downsizing tips as well as downsizing your everyday bag to a wristlet or small, hand-held bag. Not only will you be able to find what you need quicker, you will feel less bogged down.

We’ve all heard that we should be brushing twice a day and flossing, but what about chewing gum? Chewing sugar-free gum after meals helps increase saliva which helps you rinse food particles from your mouth, freshens breath, neutralizes enamel eating acids, and reduces plaque. Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating prevents tooth decay, and, most people can walk and chew gum at the same time, making it a very easy habit to adopt.

OralID™ is a new technology being used in some dental practices to screen for oral abnormalities making it possible to detect oral abnormalities, and in some casesoral cancer, long before it is visible to the dentist.
OralID™ utilizes fluorescent technology that emits a blue light to help dentists identify tissue abnormalities. Healthy tissue will shine while unhealthy tissue will appear dark, allowing the patient and dentist to have early intervention on oral abnormalities, such as oral cancer. Besides potentially being lifesaving, it’s cheap, easy and non-invasive.
Forward Science, the company who created the device, wanted to create a product that would save lives, but also be affordable so it could be widely used. Over half of oral cancers are found in their late stages, and only have a 50% survival rate. Early detection, something done with OralID™ in just minutes, offers an 80% or greater survival rate. It’s clear why their motto is: Shine Light. Save Lives™.

The Great American Smokeout is November 16th this year, a tradition dating back to the 70’s. It’s a day when smokers across the US are encouraged to quit smoking, even if only for the day. Started by the American Cancer Society, the Great American Smokeout allows smokers to immediately improve their health. Even though smoking rates have dropped by 42% since 1965, over 36 million Americans still smoke.
Increased popularity in hookah, e-cigs, and vaping are making it easier and more attractive to younger people to take up the habit as well. In fact, according to a recent study, traditional cigarette use was down from 2011-2016 among teens but both e-cigs and hookah use was up. This early tobacco use leads to nicotine addiction which creates a long-term habit.
Tobacco addiction is physical and mental and therefore requires a combination of strategies in order to break the habit. The Great American Smokeout offers several ways to help smokers quit, and those resources can be found here.
Sadly, “tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and prematuredeath in the world” American Cancer Society.” Not only does smoking increase risk of many diseases , it’s also a leading cause of oral cancer. Sadly, most oral cancers are not detected until it’s too late, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Strange as it might seem, there is a connection between Alzheimer’s disease and dental health! “People with chronic gum inflammation for 10 or more years were 70 percent more likely than people without periodontitis to develop Alzheimer’s disease.” Reuters Health
Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is the significant presence of swollen pockets in your gums. Gingivitis is the precursor to periodontal disease and is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when touched. These pockets are bacteria-filled and create the low-grade inflammation that seems to connect periodontitis with Alzheimer’s disease and dental health.
Periodontitis can be prevented, however, with good, daily oral care habits such as brushing, flossing, rinsing, and sugar-free gum chewing, as well as seeing your dentist twice a year. Even if you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, there are many ways to halt the progression of the disease before it’s too late. For More Information about Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, visit their website here. Take charge of your health today by requesting an appointment with one – a PERFECT TEETH Dentist today. Together we can fight periodontal disease and potentially reduce the number of people who develop Alzheimer’s disease.
